Polar Bears
Else Poulsen  (Animal Management Consultant)
Else has worked in the zoo profession for over 25 years. Her captive bear management experience
includes work at a number of AZA accredited zoos (including Calgary and Detroit) and has acted as
a bear management consultant for zoos and international animal welfare organizations in North America,
Europe and Asia. In collaboration with neuroscientist Dr. Cam Teskey of the University of Calgary,
she documented the first complete eradication of long term stereotypies in captive polar bears.
Poulsen's bear husbandry and behavior work is cited in trade journals, textbooks, and scientific journals.
She is currently writing a book on bear behavior, the myths and reality.
